Astrid A. Esquilín Nieves
Even in high school, Astrid knew that she wanted to focus on languages. UMass Amherst gave her a place to do that and so much more.

I came to UMass, because I knew what I wanted to major in. I talked to my guidance counselor in high school, and she asked me, "What are your plans-- what are you planning to study?" And I said, "I want to be a linguistics major." So she was like, "oh, you know UMass has the best linguistics programs." And I'm like, "OK, let me go to a tour." I visited it, loved it, and I'm here. With my linguistics degree, I would speak as many languages as I can and help others communicate, because I know how hard it is. I just can't wait to finish knowing everything about my major. If you have no idea of what you want to do, but you have a certain interest in whatever it is, UMass has the opportunities that you can use to build your own major. Dance is my thing. I could dance from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. I just get involved with student organizations. I'm in Latinos Unidos and also UMass Samba, the Brazilian club. You can make such a big school like UMass smaller by just getting involved in one small student organization. My name is Astrid A. Esquilín Nieves. I'm Class of 2018. I stand for languages, and I stand for UMass.
