Matt Powers
A University of Massachusetts Amherst classmate of Matt’s from Isenberg thought that he’d be a great fit for a new car service app. Today, Matt is the General Manager of Uber in Connecticut.
A good friend of mine from the Isenberg School had started at Uber in San Francisco. She was on the recruiting team, and she knew I looking for a new job and thought that my experience would be a great fit for the operations role in New York City for Uber. Being the public face of Uber in Connecticut is really something that I did not expect to be when I first started here at Uber. But I think that's part of the excitement of working here is we're such a fast growing company, that you never really know what's around the corner. So as a general manager, I'm responsible not only for driver operations, but for marketing, for public policy, for setting strategy for the organization, which I think my experience both at Goldman Sachs previously, and my two years at Uber working and running driver operations in New York City, really prepared me well for that. When I see Isenberg on a resume, I know that person or that candidate has had a broad range of experiences. They've done a number of internships, that they've gotten through the career center, they've worked with world class professors. And I've actually been fortunate to be able to hire a few other people into roles here at Uber from the school. I think the key to success for somebody who's graduating from UMass is to never be afraid. You're very well prepared through the school work you've done, through the experiences that you have, and nothing should hold you back from that. Never be afraid to ask questions. Never be afraid to reach out to alumni. Never be afraid to take that step, even if you don't know what's on the other side of it because you're well prepared to do so. My name is Matt Powers, General Manager at Uber. I stand for always learning something new. And I stand for UMass.
