You have to ask yourself, what is it that I want out of college? What is it that I hope to get out a college experience? Yes, you might be considering a smaller school, but there are huge benefits to a larger school that we are now just beginning to tap into the ability to be in a research lab, the ability to actually be a part of something meaningful that is very cutting edge, the ability to meet students from all over the world. As somebody who came from a very poor family in a developing country, I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to be in an institution like this. There are very few places that you can go where the very thing that you're learning theoretically in the classroom, you can walk from that class and within five minutes, you can go into a research lab. And you're doing practically what you just learned in theory. This is my graduate student, Kelly. Because of new facilities like these, we now have more lab space. We have modern labs spaces. And so our undergraduate students who we train are getting on publications before they graduate. And so what that does now for our students is that puts them in the driver's seat for going to any graduate program, because they're going there with experience that sometimes you don't find in second-year graduate students. And that is what a UMass education does. A UMass education prepares our students to go out there and tackle the leading problems of the world, and to be an effective voice in meeting these challenges, and being able to find meaningful solutions. And so at graduation when we celebrate with them, we're not just celebrating the fact that they finished college, we're celebrating the fact that we are turning out a crop of students who are going to go out there and do such meaningful work that they're going to significantly impact the communities that they find themselves in, both here in the United States and abroad. And so we take really deep pride in preparing these students for their future goals. My name is Wilmore Webley, an associate professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I stand for research and teaching excellence, and I stand for UMass.
